This book and the exhibition honours the history of South African Quilting and top quilters in South Africa.
In South Africa Quilting isn’t as big a part of our cultural history as, forinstance, in America or England, but one cannot doubt it’s richness. The white-starched quilted sun-bonnets women wore during the pioneering days in South Africa indeed form one of the highlights of Folk Art in our country.
One of the oldest quilted coverlets dates from the period between 1805 and 1806 and is on display in the Drostdy Museum in Swellendam.
The SAQG selected 15 of these heritage quilts or articles in museums and then three top quilters were invited to to present their interpretations of it. Thus every heritage quilt has a traditional, an innovative and an
artistic interpretation. Within three months 45 quilters had produced incredible artworks which one can not only see in the book but copy as well as all patterns are included.
The exhibition of 53 exquisitely quilted blocks is being held at the Pink Haus Gallery in Groot Brak, Southern Cape until 31 October 2013. Gallery times are from 10am until 3pm on weekdays and from 10am until 1pm on Saturdays.Contact Vivienne Holtzhausen on 082 730 1001 or 044 620 3085 for details or
