(Short term sacrifice for long term gain. Jane Downes, 2007)
a) Kies die regte skoolvakke in graad 9

Mossel Bay welcomes Women’s Golf Team Championships

MOSSEL BAY, 21 May 2014: Women’s Golf South Africa’s 72-hole Team Championships gets under way at the Mossel Bay Golf Club on Monday, 25 May.
Twenty four teams of three players each will tee off in two divisions: twelve teams in the A-division playing for the Swiss Team Trophy, and the B-division teams chasing the Challenge Trophy in the 72-hole Stroke Play event.

With Sunday, May 25th reserved for practice rounds, free entry for all spectators on practice and competition days, and predictions for mild, stable weather throughout the event, the next week promises to be a feast for golf lovers.

The tournament has received the support of the Municipality of Mossel Bay, which recognises the power of sport both as a force for unity amongst people, and as an important driver of tourism – and therefore as a driver of the economy of the town.
Executive mayor Alderlady Marie Ferreira welcomed the participants.

“A love for golf presupposes a love for the outdoors and the natural environment. I can therefore hardly think of a venue suited better than Mossel Bay for a major golf tournament such as Women’s Golf South Africa’s 2014 Team Championships,” she said.

She thanked Women’s Golf South Africa for selecting Mossel Bay as the venue for the event, and the Southern Cape Women’s Golf Association for its work in ensuring the tournament’s success.

Alderlady Ferreira will host a prize giving lunch for the players and officials on Wednesday.
Rita Herholdt, president of Southern Cape Women’s Golf Association – the host province – said that everything is in place for a top-rate tournament.

“The course is looking good – in fact I don’t know if I’ve ever seen it looking this good – and nine of the ten top-ranked players in the country will be here, so we’re going to see some real international quality golf.”

She said that the field includes Carrie Park (ranked first), and Magda Kruger (2) – both playing for Gauteng North A; Ji Sun Kang (3) and Cara Gorlei (6) playing for Western Province A; Michaela Fletcher (4) playing for Kwazulu Natal A: Monja Richards (5) playing for Mpumalanga; Kaleigh Telfer (7) and Lara Weinstein (10) playing for Gauteng A; and Mae Cornforth (8) playing for North West A.
“Only number 9, Bianca Theron, won’t be with us,” said Ms. Herholdt.

Mossel Bay Golf Club manager, Louw Strydom, said that the course is in “absolutely fabulous condition from tee to green.

“Going into their main flowering season, the fynbos and the aloes – and the springbuck that roam freely on the course – all seem to be rejoicing in the good rainfall we’ve had in recent weeks.

“But it’s going to be a challenging game: the course will be playing long and the slick greens will add to the difficulty factor, especially if we get any wind.”
Mossel Bay Tourism’s Marcia Holm welcomed the players and officials – and called on visitors and locals to support the event.

“The Mossel Bay Golf Course is known as the course where you can see the sea from every tee – but it’s also known as the friendly club, and they always make everyone feel at home.

“Golf is one of the town’s most popular attractions, and I suspect that many of the spectators will want to play Mossel Bay themselves after the tournament is over – so it’s worth reminding you that the Club is offering 18 holes with shared golf cart hire at a hugely discounted rate during the month of May as part of Mossel Bay’s Mild Season,” she said.
Ms. Herholdt said that the Southern Cape Women’s Golf Association appreciates the support that Mossel Bay and its Municipality give to sport in general in the town.
“We wish all the players good golfing over the next few days; may all your drives go straight and may all your putts find the bottom of the cups,” she said. •

PetroSA Nature Reserve

Since moving to the PetroSA Nature Reserve, we’ve been doing a lot of work on the reserve to try and improve the general look of it and make it more people friendly.
This month we added a short hiking trail called ‘Aloe Valley’ which was first tested and tried by the children from Little Lighthouse and was thoroughly enjoyed. Another hiking trail around the dam is in progress and will be completed in the weeks to come.
We have also relocated the bee hives and hope it will ‘bee’ occupied soon.
As part of our veld management plan we are looking to burn another section on the reserve. A burning plan has been drafted and the permit has been approved. We will wait for the weather conditions to be right then we will start lighting the matches.

We are Live

We have set up a temporary website with all our necessary information and contact details. Take a look at our youtube video links and photos in the gallery @

Little Light House
The Little Lighthouse preschool visited PetroSA Nature Reserve for an educational outreach. The day was filled with a lot of fun where the children learnt about creation, walked on the new hiking trail, assisted the interns to feed the animals, danced and also did bio monitoring. The school also opened up the opportunity for the parents to accompany their children. The day was celebrated with a lovely lunchpack provided by PetroSA. Some of the parents also brought picnic baskets and sat down on the grass and enjoyed lunch with their children. Overall it was a very successful day which everyone thoroughly enjoyed.
Farewell Ilzabe

This month we bid farewell to another one of our students. Ilzabé was the student selected to run the Dogs on Beaches Project. Through this project she was able to set up her own enterprise and will continue running the project as an independent entity. We wish her all the best for her future ahead.
Unicorn goes Extinct

In the two years that we’ve worked on the PetroSA Nature Reserve, there was one animal that we could easily distinguish from the rest, a one horned Bontebok ram, named Unicorn. Sadly Unicorn died this month due to natural causes. We will miss our unusual looking, easy identifiable, one horned Bontebok on the reserve.

Employee of the Month
Congratulations to Sarel, our employee of the month, for his hard work and perseverance. For his work on the PetroSA Nature Reserve: planning hiking trail, drafting burning plan, setting up bee hives. •

Gimnasium:
Sluit aan by ‘n fiksheidsklas.

Maak tyd:
• Vir skeppende, kreatiewe dinge bv tuinmaak, sport, oefen
• Tyd vir lag – lag vir jouself of doen iets laf. Lees elke dag ‘n grappie.
Hoe lyk dit by jou? Oorlog of onmin in die huis of by die werk?

SA Tourism’s #MeetSouthAfrica bloggers to explore Human Origins in Mossel Bay

Five top international and South African travel bloggers will visit Mossel Bay next week to enjoy a Point of Human Origins Experience – and learn why this part of South Africa is attracting world attention as the birthplace of culture and advanced technology.

The group is taking part in South African Tourism’s #MeetSouthAfrica campaign, which aims to leverage the power of social media to market the destination.

The campaign will see a total of fourteen bloggers visiting all of the country’s provinces in the run-up to the SA Tourism Indaba, which will take place in Durban from the 10th to the 12th of May. The bloggers will travel the country in three separate parties while sharing and writing about their experiences. They’ll then meet up again to take part in various events at the Indaba – including a panel discussion which will take place in the Indaba’s new TechZone.

SA Tourism’s #MeetSouthAfrica blogger’s campaign was launched last year as a new way of communicating with potential travellers. According to figures released by the country’s destination marketing organisation, the campaign’s hash tag (#MeetSouthAfrica) has attracted more than 219 million impressions on social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest.

“We’re very excited to welcome these influential writers to Mossel Bay because we believe that the archaeology of the area – which has revealed the earliest evidence for modern human behaviour – is a differentiator unlike any other,” said Mossel Bay Tourism’s Marcia Holm.

“They’re in for an experience they couldn’t find anywhere else in the world.”

The archaeology that’s attracting all this attention was identified in 1997 when Jonathan Kaplan – the director of the Agency for Cultural Resource Management – and Dr. Peter Nilssen (who was then working towards a PhD.) made a routine survey for an environmental impact study on the land that would become the Pinnacle Point Beach & Golf Resort.

Dr. Nilssen and Professor Curtis Marean (an associate director of the Institute of Human Origins and professor at the School of Human Evolution and Social Change at Arizona State University) set up the Mossel Bay Archaeology Project to study the finds in 2000, and Prof. Marean established the SACP4 Project – The South African Coastal Palaeoclimate, Palaeoenvironment, Palaeoecology and Palaeoanthropology Project – in 2005. This Project now involves more than 40 scientists from around the world.

“We know from genetic research that all people alive today are descendants of a core population of less than a thousand individuals who lived in Africa between 150,000 and 200,000 years ago – and what we’ve found here shows that at least a portion of this population lived in the area around Mossel Bay,” said Dr. Nilssen.

This, he said, is where mankind first began systematically harvesting the sea (which – since it requires an intimate knowledge of the tides and other aspects of the marine environment – indicates that we’d developed advanced levels of thinking 162,000 years ago); and where we first used ochre for symboling or decoration – which places Mossel Bay as the birthplace of culture.

“The archaeology has also revealed the earliest use of complex bladelet technology (in which tiny, exquisitely-made stone blades were embedded into wood or bone to create more efficient weapons than any we’d had before), and the earliest use of fire as an engineering tool (annealing silcrete with controlled and sustained heat in order to produce a better quality raw material for manufacturing stone blades) – both of which place Mossel Bay as the birthplace of advanced technology.

“But equally importantly, the Pinnacle Point Caves – where most of these discoveries have been made – also contain fossilised carbon and oxygen isotopes which provide us with a record of the climate of the area over the period 30,000 to 400,000 years ago.

“Besides being the birthplace of culture and technology, Pinnacle Point thus becomes the one place in the world where we can start to understand how climate change affects us as a species over long periods of time.”
Dr. Nilssen’s Point of Human Origins Experience – arranged by The Oystercatcher Trail in partnership with the Pinnacle Point Homeowners Association, Heritage Western Cape, and the SACP4 Project – includes a walking tour of the Pinnacle Point Caves and a presentation and discussion about the origins of modern human behaviour, and the significance of what we’re learning from the archaeology of the Middle Stone Age in South Africa.

The #MeetSouthAfrica bloggers – Brazil’s Mauricio Oliveira (who publishes www.trilhaseaventuras.com.br), Malaysia’s Umei The (www.ccfoodtravel.com), Canada’s Rob Lloyd (www.stophavingaboringlife.com), and South Africa’s Ishay Govender (www.foodandthefabulous.com) and Katarina Mancama (www.simplysouthafrica.wordpress.com) – will share their experiences with their international audiences on their sites, and on the social web using the hashtag #MeetSouthAfrica. Round-ups of highlights of their tour will be published on www.southafrica.net/blog.

Buffalo Rally will return for the next three years

MOSSEL BAY: 30 APRIL 2014 – Mossel Bay Tourism has welcomed the news that the Buffalo Rally will return to the town for three more years. This after the council voted in favour of entering into a new contract with the organisers, Cape Town’s Nomads Motorcycle Club, at its regular monthly meeting, which took place last week.

“The Buff is becoming something of a tradition in Mossel Bay, and we’re very happy that it’s going to continue,” said Mossel Bay Tourism’s Marcia Holm. “It always delivers a massive injection into the local economy, it always benefits local charities, and it always creates new ambassadors for Mossel Bay.

“It’s really a win-win for everybody.”

Nomads Motorcycle Club chairperson, Luderick Jacoby, said he was delighted to hear the news.

“It’s terrific. We’ve run the Buff in Mossel Bay nine times since 2005 (it went to Aliwal North in 2008), and we love the destination.”

He said that the institutional memory that comes from arranging the event in the same venue year after year makes the organisers’ jobs easier as time goes by. “We get to know the Municipality’s requirements, and they get to know what we need, and everything goes smoothly for everyone.”

Like Ms. Holm, Mr. Jacoby said that having the rally in Mossel Bay definitely influences riders to return to the town for future holidays.

“Riders tell us all the time that they love Mossel Bay, and many of them have posted about it on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/BuffaloRally). The excitement is already building for 2015.”

Mossel Bay Round Table has by tradition manned and managed the beer tents in the rally grounds.

“We haven’t finalised our agreement with the Nomads yet, but we hope the arrangement will continue on the same footing as before since The Buff is our biggest fund-raising event of the year,” said Table chairperson Edward Weston.

“We put about 75% of the profits back into various community projects in Mossel Bay.

“Over the years, the Round Tables of Mossel Bay and Zeeuwsch Vlaanderen in the Netherlands were able to raise R 400,000 for the construction of new buildings for the Khanyisa Day Care Centre in kwaNonqaba – and much of our contribution came from the money we raised at The Buff.

“We opened the new facilities in February 2013, and we continue to support the centre via cash contributions.

“We also use some of the profits from The Buff to make a significant annual donation to the NSRI – partly because their members help us to staff the beer tents on a voluntary basis.”

Mr. Jacoby said that the Nomads are aware that some riders misbehaved this year, which caused irritation for some of the citizens of Mossel Bay.

“We will continue to work hard with the authorities and the riders to ensure that future events are worry-free for the people of Mossel Bay – because we really appreciate their hospitality.

The next three Buffalo Rallies will take place on 19 to 22 March 2015, 17 to 20 March, 2016, and 16 to 19 March 2017. More information from the Nomads Motorcycle Club: www.nomads.org.za. For more information about Mossel Bay, please go to www.visitmosselbay.co.za
