INTERNATIONAL SURVIVORS DAY 2015

CANSA recognises anyone living with a history of cancer – from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life – as a cancer survivor. This year International Cancer Survivor’s Day was celebrated on Tuesday, 2 June 2015.

Thank you to each and every cancer survivor, who shows us that life after a cancer diagnosis can be meaningful, productive and even inspiring. And that is something to celebrate!

Tonight before we fall asleep, let’s be greatful for every new memory. Let us be thankful for being granted the gift of another day.

Sunset Parade for Cassinga Day

On the 13th of May a Sunset Parade was held in commemoration of the paratroopers who died in the Battle of Cassinga (1978). This parade was held by the MOTH’s of the Blaize Away Shell Hole.

During the Battle of Cassinga four paratroopers lost their lives and eleven were injured. Two of the eleven were in a critical condition.

The Parade started when the MOTH’s got together in front of the Cenotaph. They stood to attention as MOTH Gottfried Wrede accounted the history of the Battle. MOTH John Barnard laid down the first tin hat in honour of the fallen. Thereafter MOTH Gottfried Wrede laid down the second tin hat. After both hats were placed at the foot of the Cenotaph, the MOTH’s had a moment of silence and dispersed in an orderly manner.

During this touching display of remembrance the sun lit up the Cenotaph in the true
essence of the Sunset Parade.

We honour the fallen.

Watter rangskikking pas by watter persoonlikheid?

Dis eintlik baie eenvoudig.

1 Azalea’s: Oorvloed
2. Begonia’s: Diep gedagtes
3. Wit Chrysanthemums: Waarheid
4. Rooi Chrysanthemums: Mededeelsaam
5. Geel Chrysanthemums: Geheime bewonderaar
6. Kosmos :Vreedsaam
7. Daisy: Onskuld
8. Daglelies :Entoesiasme
9. Marigold (Afrikanertjies):Rykdom
10. Nasturtium (Kappertjies): Patriotisme
11. Orgideë: Skoonheid
12. Pansy (Gesiggies):Goeie bedoellings
13. Pienk Rose: Admirasie
14. Rooi Rose: Passie
15. Wit Rose: Reinheid
16. Geel Rose: Vriendskap

Elke blom het sy eie boodskappie. So volgende keer as jy blomme vir iemand stuur, dink bietjie oor wat jy daarmee wil sê. Blomme sê dit beter!

RATIO BETWEEN BLUE AND BLACK REFUSE BAGS TO CHANGE

The Mossel Bay Municipality will, in response to requests by community members and a subsequent investigation, soon start to issue moreblack and less blue refuse bags for the removal of household waste.
The Municipality has for some time now issued an equal number of black and blue bags, namely 13 of each per pack, to households in February, May, August and November annually.
The rationale for issuing an equal number of blue and black bags was to encourage recycling but recent experience has shown that, although good progress is being made with recycling, regular waste volumes exceed recyclable waste. As a result, the ratio between black and blue bags will be changed to 18:8 when the Municipality’s current stock of refuse bags runs out.
Households needing more blue bags for recycling can contact the waste recycling contractors, Green’s Waste, at telephone (044) 695-1138 or the Waste and Pollution Department at the Municipality at (044) 606-5143.

What does drugs do to the Brain?

Drugs are chemicals. They work in the brain by tapping into its communication system interfering with the way nerve cells normally send, receive, and process information. Different drugs, because of their chemical structures, work differently. In fact, some drugs can change the brain in ways that last long after the person has stopped taking drugs, maybe even permanently. This is more likely when a drug is taken repeatedly.

Some drugs, such as marijuana and heroin, activate neurons because their chemical structure mimics that of a natural neurotransmitter. In fact, these drugs can “fool” receptors, can lock onto them, and can activate the nerve cells. The problem is, they don’t work the same way as a natural neurotransmitter, so the neurons wind up sending abnormal messages through the brain.

Other drugs, such as amphetamine, cause nerve cells to release excessive amounts of natural neurotransmitters or prevent the normal recycling of these brain chemicals (cocaine and amphetamine).
This leads to an exaggerated message in the brain, ultimately wreaking havoc on the communication channels. The difference in effect is like the difference between someone whispering in your ear versus someone shouting in a microphone.

All drugs of abuse – nicotine, cocaine, marijuana and others – affect the brain’s “reward” circuit, which is part of the limbic system. Normally, the reward circuit responds to pleasurable experiences by releasing the neurotransmitter dopamine, which creates feelings of pleasure, and tells the brain that this is something important – pay attention and remember it. Drugs hijack this system, causing unusually large amounts of dopamine to flood the system. Sometimes, this lasts for a long time compared to what happens when a natural reward stimulates dopamine.

This flood of dopamine is what causes the “high” or euphoria associated with drug abuse.
