WHY BITCOINS ARE POPULAR

Bitcoins are basically lines of computer code that are digitally signed each time they travel from one owner to the next. Transactions can be made anonymously, You can send money to any person anywhere in the world , the money will be in that person’s Bitcoin wallet with in minutes and will cost only a few cents. If you invested in Bitcoin January 2016 at R 6864,65 you would have tripled your investment today. May 2017 – current value R 39 684.

1. Bitcoin has lower inflation risk: All world currencies are controlled by their respective governments. This is what at times leads to fluctuation in the value of the currencies since governments keep printing more money. When a currency loses value, its purchasing power goes down and leads to paying more money to acquire the products. In the end, it is like a tax on what people have already acquired, which may not be enough at the same time. With Bitcoin, the system is infinite and therefore no need to worry about the money getting finished. By the year2050, it is estimated that there will be in circulation one Bitcoin to cater for 500 people globally.

2. Bitcoin investors believe that the currency has a lower falling risk, compared to other currencies. This is because Bitcoin is a global currency that does not depend on government policy that can fail and cause hyperinflation or complete collapse of the currency.

3. Bitcoin transactions are simple, easy, and cheap. Since the buyers cannot claim their money back after purchase, it gives the sellers an opportunity to ship the product or service to the buyer without any worry of recovery.

4. Bitcoin is portable: With the current major currencies, it is difficult to carry around large amounts of money. Cash amounting to millions is risky to carry for several reasons, which is why Bitcoin investors prefer it to other currencies. With Bitcoin, you can easily carry around a million dollars worth of Bitcoin in a memory card.

5. It cannot be traced. This is another advantage of Bitcoin. Once the seller gets the money, it cannot go back to the buyer by any means. This is important because no government can trace the source of your funds.

The bitcoin network works by harnessing individuals greed for the collective good. A network of tech-sawysers called miners keep the system honest by pouring their computing power into a blockchain, a global running tally of every bitcoin transaction. The block-chain prevents rogues from spending the same bitcoin twice, and the miners are rewarded for their effords by being gited with the occasional bitcoin. As long as miners keep the blockchain secure, counterfeiting shouldn’t be an issue.

“EFFORT AGAINST WESTERN CAPE CHILD MURDERS AND ABUSE”

The Community Chest of the Western Cape has committed funding to facilitate a concerted, collaborative effort by childcare organisations and role-players against disturbingly high levels of child abuse and murder in the province. According to reports, at least 21 children have been killed in the Western Cape since the beginning of 2017.

This commitment was one of the main outcomes of a forum held by the Community Chest at St George’s Cathedral, Cape Town, on Friday (23 June 2017). It gave these organisations a platform to voice their concerns, as well as offer solutions for a spate of violence that has been described as “tragic, sad and absolutely horrendous”.

Lorenzo Davids, CEO, Community Chest of the Western Cape, said: “Today we have to begin to spearhead the widest possible collaboration of all interested parties – across organisational, political and religious lines – in the interest of the protection of our children. The aim is to distill what we’ve discussed here today into a sensible and direct strategy.”

Davids said the Community Chest was willing “to put money on the table” to facilitate and coordinate this process. “However, it has to be led by people on the ground, people who are passionate about these issues. Justice, the police, social development and health authorities are all key players in this process,” he said.
“The Community Chest takes this battle very seriously. We’re making this contribution so that something concrete can start taking place,” said Davids.

Valdi van Reenen-le Roux, Executive Director, Trauma Centre for Survivors of Violence and Torture, and one of the panelists at the forum, said her organisation would continue to lobby Western Cape Premier Helen Zille to launch a commission of enquiry into the violence against children in the province.

Others voicing their concerns said violence was the result of a myriad of factors – from poverty, socio-economic conditions, alcohol and substance abuse, inter-generational trauma that has not been addressed, to a slow justice system.
“Pulling together these loose ends, a commission of enquiry would give the various role-players and structures a space to talk about the problems and causes, so that all the voices can be heard,” said Van Reenen-le Roux.

The desired end result would be for such a commission to draft a report with its findings and recommendations, and hand it to organisations such as the Community Chest to inform funding decisions, she said.

The Community Chest invited the childcare organisations, NGOs and other role-players who attended Friday’s forum to join a 20-member steering group that will drive the collaborative initiative.

Joan Daries, Programme Manager at Community Chest responsible for the roll-out of this initiative said that her team will be arranging other engagements and focus group meetings to bring the process together cohesively. “It’s important that we stay in conversation with one another,” said Daries.
