Vasbyt – Rina Kotze

(Short term sacrifice for long term gain. Jane Downes, 2007)
a) Kies die regte skoolvakke in graad 9

Caffeine withdrawal is now a mental disorder

We’ve all probably had that one coffee drink (or carbonated beverage) too many, at that point in a slog of a day where we’ve gone and imbibed a Red Bull or Grande coffee against our better judgment.

According to a new edition of the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders out last week (DSM, or in this case, DSM-5), that sort of excessive caffeine intake can lead to a condition known as “caffeine intoxication,” except it’s nothing like the sort of blissful stupor we tend to associate with that other sort of intoxication.

If you’ve had more than 250 mg of caffeine (two to three cups of brewed coffee) and experienced five or more of the following symptoms, says the guide, you’ve probably been caffeine-buzzed: restlessness, nervousness, excitement, insomnia, flushed face, diuresis (having to pee a lot), gastrointestinal disturbance, muscle twitching, rambling flow of thought and speech, tachycardia or cardiac arrhythmia, periods of inexhaustibility or psychomotor agitation (unintentional motion, say, rapidly bouncing one leg).

This disorder, as it’s described in both the older DSM-IV and new DSM-5, falls under the heading “Caffeine-Related Disorders,” but in DSM-5, that section includes a new entry: caffeine withdrawal. According to DSM-5, symptoms of caffeine withdrawal include fatigue, headache and difficulty focusing.

“Caffeine is a drug, a mild stimulant, which is used by almost everybody on a daily basis,” said Dr. Charles O’Brien, who chairs the Substance-Related Disorder Work Group for DSM-5 (via New York Post). “But it does have a letdown afterwards. If you drink a lot of coffee, at least two or three [236 ml] cups at a time, there will be a rebound or withdrawal effect.”

Anyone who’s binged on caffeine then stopped, cold turkey, knows the withdrawal symptoms are anything but make-believe — the headaches alone can be excruciating. The question some are asking is whether it belongs in a guide devoted to mental disorders (or, for that matter, whether caffeine intoxication does).

“The symptoms of caffeine withdrawal are transitory, they take care of themselves,” said clinical psychologist Robin Rosenberg (via International Science Times), noting that the effects are temporary. “It’s just a natural response to stopping caffeine, and it clears up on its own in short order.”

DSM-5 work-group member Alan J. Budney attempted to address the controversy back in December 2011, when caffeine withdrawal was announced as being “recommended for inclusion” in the revised guide.

“We feel that there is enough data to support a caffeine-withdrawal syndrome,” said Budney. “There are enough people who go into withdrawal — that if they don’t get caffeine, it becomes a real syndrome and can affect work, sleep, or whatever they need to do. So we’re suggesting that it ‘make the big leagues’ and become part of the DSM to make sure everyone is aware of it.” •

DANIE PRAAT INHEEMS – Blackwood

New web-based art route for Mossel Bay

Mossel Bay Tourism’s new web-based art route for Mossel Bay is currently under construction at mosselbayart.co.za.

“The first posts under categories like ‘Artists’, ‘Interior Designers’, ‘Antiques and collectibles’, and ‘Galleries’ are live, and we’re adding more every day now,” said the company’s COO, Marcia Holm.

The site was launched last year to market the Craft Art Workshop – the artists’ collective in Market Street which is managed by the Local Economic Development Department of the Mossel Bay Municipality. “But the intention was always to use it as a showcase for arts and culture for the entire region from Great Brak River to the Gourits River, and inland to Herbertsdale and Friemersheim,” said Ms. Holm.

She said that festivals, performances spaces, museums, and other cultural organisations will be included in due course.
“We’ve also opened a category for ‘food artisans’ (Craft foods & drink) because there’s a huge demand for information about people like independent cheese makers, coffee roasters, wine makers, and micro brewers.”
Ms. Holm said that anyone whose art- or culture-related business is open to the public is welcome to apply to be included in the route – even if the business is open by appointment only.

“We chose to go the electronic route rather than to print a paper map, and to build the site both in desk-top and mobile versions because most travellers today get the information they need on the web, and most of them use their mobile devices to find individual attractions when they’re in their chosen destinations.”

With the fifth international Responsible Travel Week starting on Monday, 10 February, Ms. Holm said that the art route is seen as a method of promoting engagement between visitors and the people of Mossel Bay as the host community.
“Responsible Travel is defined as creating better places to live in, and better places to visit, and the kind of one-to-one discussions that happen between artists and the people who visit them is exactly the kind of engagement we want this route to promote,” she said.
Artists, crafters, designers, food artisans, and community cultural groups who wish to be included in the art route are invited to contact

STUNNING AIRSHOW AT DIAS FESTIVAL

Festivalgoers at the 2014 Dias Festival can look forward to more of the stunning performances of the Eqstra Flying Lions aerobatics team in their Harvard T-6 aircraft.
These daring pilots had festivalgoers gasping for their breaths at the 2013 Dias Festival and will be back at the Standard Bank Airshow during the 2014 Dias Festival. Their programme will again include a spectacular evening display on 31 January 2014.

The 2014 Dias Festival, which is co-ordinated by the Mossel Bay Municipality as a project to stimulate the local economy and market the town, will take place from 30 January 2014 to    February 2014.

As was the case at the previous two Dias Festivals, the Western Cape aerobatics championships will again form part of the festival programme. The championship will be preceded by practice sessions on 30 January 2014, while the official competition will take place on 31 January 2013 and 1 February 2014.

The Standard Bank Airshow, where the Flying Lions will perform in their World War II machines, will take place on the Saturday, 1 February 2014.  In addition to the Flying Lions, several other interesting aircraft are expected to participate. These include a Hunter jet, a RV7, a T29 Trojan, an MX2, a Yak 55 and a Suhkoi.

The programme will also include skydiving performance. Like in 2013 there will be a big flag jump.

More information about the festival can be obtained from the Office of the Municipal Manager at (044) 606-5003, or by e-mail to festivals@mosselbay.gov.za or feeste@mosselbay.gov.za. Information can also be obtained from the website www.mosselbayevents.co.za. •

HYATT REGENCY OUBAAI CELEBRATES LIFE

Milissa Els Karools Hauptfleisch Sandra Kneubeuhler

GEORGE (October 2013) – On 11 November 2013 the Hyatt Regency Oubaai Golf Resort and Spa will be celebrating life in the best way possible.  The ‘Celebrate Life’ fun walk will be hosted by the Hyatt Regency Oubaai aimed at raising funds for two charitable causes…another first of its kind added to the list of firsts already rolled out by this five star resort.  The funds raised by this walk will be allocated to the Carpe Diem School and to the Garrett Ehrman Support Group.

Garrett Ehrman arrived home on Sunday, 5th October and will continue his recovery from a disastrous car accident in September. Garrett sustained serious head and chest injuries and his recovery will be a long and costly process.  He has no medical aid and the Hyatt Regency Oubaai subsequently decided to allocate some of the funds raised by the fun walk to help with Garrett’s vast medical expenses.
The Hyatt Regency Oubaai also recently announced that it has taken on the Carpe Diem School as its official social responsibility project for 2014. This school for children with special needs only receives a minimal subsidy per learner from the government and therefore it has to lean heavily on donations and fundraising events.  The fact that the Hyatt Regency Oubaai will be supporting Carpe Diem over the next year was received with great excitement by the passionate headmaster, Karools Hauptfleisch.  Part of the funds raised by the ‘Celebrate Life’ fun walk will be allocated to the school and will most definitely be used where most needed.

Although this is only the first ‘Celebrate Life’ fun walk, the Hyatt Regency Oubaai already expects in excess of 300 participants. This event will take place at the Hyatt Regency Oubaai with its stunning natural landscape and the setting alone will without a doubt surpass the expectancy of everybody taking part. The festive atmosphere will be amplified by the smell of boerewors grilling on open fire, a beer tent and live entertainment of note!

By starting with this great initiative the Hyatt Regency Oubaai hopes to invest in the lives of those in need.  The first two charitable causes were identified and in future many more in need will be helped. Margaret Mead said “Never believe that a few caring people can’t change the world. For, indeed, that’s all who ever have”. Join in on the fun and festivities and help the Hyatt Regency Oubaai to make a difference. Celebrate Life!

This book and the exhibition honours the history of South African Quilting and top quilters in South Africa.

In South Africa Quilting isn’t as big a part of our cultural history as, forinstance, in America or England, but one cannot doubt it’s richness. The white-starched quilted sun-bonnets women wore during the pioneering days in South Africa indeed form one of the highlights of Folk Art in our country.

One of the oldest quilted coverlets dates from the period between 1805 and 1806 and is on display in the Drostdy Museum in Swellendam.

The SAQG selected 15 of these heritage quilts or articles in museums and then three top quilters were invited to to present their interpretations of it. Thus every heritage quilt has a traditional, an innovative and an
artistic interpretation. Within three months 45 quilters had produced incredible artworks which one can not only see in the book but copy as well as all patterns are included.

The exhibition of 53 exquisitely quilted blocks is being held at the Pink Haus Gallery in Groot Brak, Southern Cape until 31 October 2013. Gallery times are from 10am until 3pm on weekdays and from 10am until 1pm on Saturdays.Contact Vivienne Holtzhausen on 082 730 1001 or 044 620 3085 for details or
