GREAT BRAK RIVER – THE GREAT MUSE FEST

201408281409211479 Great Brak Logo

Great Brak River is a delightful little gem of a town situated at the confluence of the Great Brak River and the Indian Ocean on the Garden Route of the Southern Cape. It offers the scenic beauty of the majestic Outeniqua Mountains and the azure blue sea, rolling green hills and pastures, rich agriculture and culture. River bush and fynbos, aloe and dolphin, whale, suikerbekkie and man live side by side in a place one can only describe as paradise. The community is alive and the area is yet to be discovered by tourists. There is an Arts Route, several Cycling and Hiking Routes, the Fragrance Route (lavender planted in local gardens) and a Historic route. The community is alive with cultural activities, musical events and art in all its forms. It’s a tourist’s route. POP UP ART

During the Great Muse Fest
….will be launching their first pop-up exhibition under the trees at Tafeltjie Dek during the Great Muse Festival activity on Friday 26 September 2014.
A group of artists from the Great Brak River area,(who became friends at Voorbrug Art School) get together once in a while to magnify their creative abilities through various art mediums. They will be painting and exhibiting at Tafeltjie Dek on Friday 26 September as part of the Great Muse Fest. Come and discover the hidden talent in this gem of a town and the Muse at work in these artists. You can meet them and view their work, which is for sale.

It is one thing to see a painting on a wall in a gallery and a totally different story when one meets the artist behind the brush.

Lynda Jacobsen is a professional artist whose art is displayed in various art galleries in the Western Cape. Her creative passion is ignited by ever-changing subject matter . Joie de Vivre explains her art, capturing the viewer’s attention, with a burst of colour and brush strokes.

Cherie Dobie and Carina Beyers, from Mossel Bay, are also part of the group. Cherie’s pencil work is her passion and imagination her muse. She loves working alone in her chaotic studio at home, drawing patrons quietly in coffee shops or painting together with friends “en plein air”.
Carina has a wonderful sense of colour, painting often in a style not unlike Renoir, which comes seemingly easily and naturally to her. Flowers are her favourite subject, but she’s learnt to be versatile too.
Laurinda Smit does sculpture and the most amazing detailed mandalas for which she offers workshops. Mandalas are a creative, therapeutic process often with an unexpected, beautiful result. Laurinda is also the owner of the lovely meditative garden in Great Brak River, 103 Steps, Sandhoogte Road, where people are welcome to get in touch with their “Muse” or just sit and meditate and find peace in nature. •

Surfer Kids – Non Profit

The Surfer Kids NON-Profit
“Empowering youths in marginalized communities through surfing”

Share the The Stroke Foundation SA is to share that incredible feeling of riding a great wave.
They do this by donating surfboards to projects such as ours, The Surfer Kids NON-Profit, and similar organizations that spread the love of surfing amongst people who wouldn’t normally have access to it.
The Surfer Kids NON-Profit received three brand new Firewire Surfboards from Share The Stroke Foundation SA, and it’s already made an impact on the development of our kid’s surfing skills !

Ross Taylor Surf Contest:
The 6th annual Ross Taylor Surf Contest was held in Buffels Bay, Knysna SA, from the 8th to the 10th of August 2014 and over the last 4 years The Surfer Kids NON- Profit have become an integral part of this event.
The Surfer Kids NON- Profit brought 15 children to partake in the Development and Teenage divisions, while our Programme Coordinaters were responsible for running the Development Divisions.

Construction of Storeroom & Workshop:
It’s been a relatively slow process but, considering it’s a volunteer project, we’re making good progress with
The Surfer Kids NON- Profit storeroom & workshop in Friemersheim !
We’re now almost up to roof level with our walls ! But we’re far from finished .. To start with, we still need roof sheets and lots of cement for the concrete floor !
When finished, this facility will be much more than just a storage space for The Surfer Kids’ equipment ! It’ll also be a workshop to empower the children in our programme, giving them a creative space to work in, doing their own board repairs and helping to further develop the programme !

LOCAL STARS – Talent Kompetisie

The power of a womans voice

The Department of Human Settlements is celebrating Women’s Month to celebrate all women in South Africa, specifically within the human settlements sector by honouring and acknowledging the heroes who fought for the freedom of women oppression and gender equality in all aspects of life.

In commemoration of Women’s Month, the Deputy Minister, Honorable Zou Kota-Fredericks hosted a women’s breakfast and a public engagement in Mosselbay on access to housing.

This was a wonderful opportunity for the integration of women from the rural and urban areas in Mosselbay to engage with Human Settlements on opportunities that exist for woman in the Human Settlements.
