EPWP LIGHTENS THE LOAD DURING HOLIDAY SEASON

Fifty Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) workers supplemented the work of the George Municipality to make beaches and town safer and cleaner during the holiday period.

These lifeguards made sure the people at Gwaiing River Mouth were safe in the water. The EPWP is a national government-funded programme that provides poverty and income relief through temporary work for the unemployed to carry out socially useful activities. This past season EPWP workers assisted on beach patrols, law enforcement, in the fire brigade control room and cleaning.
The law enforcement team that looked after the safety of people at Leentjiesklip over the festive season. The beach patrol and law enforcement teams monitored safety and behaviour of beach visitors, communicated and assisted in emergency situations, provided local information and enforce beach by-laws and rules. They had to provide visible presence to deter improper activity and discourage any activities that may have created a disturbance to others, among other things. Law enforcement workers were placed at municipal beaches Herold’s Bay, Victoria Bay, Gwaiing (Pacaltsdorp) and Leentjiesklip (Wilderness). Beach patrol workers completed duties on 15 January but workers assisting Law Enforcement will work until 30 June 2018. EPWP lifeguards were placed at Herold’s Bay, Steps, Leentjiesklip, Victoria Bay, Wilderness Main Beach, Wilderness Lagoon, Conville Swimming pool and Gwaiing Beach (Pacaltsdorp). They were to monitor activities of swimmers and prevent illegal conduct. Five EPWP control room assistants were placed at the Fire Brigade control room through the festive season to assist with incoming telephone calls and emergencies. EPWP cleaners were placed in residential areas, the CBD, open public spaces, public toilets and GO GEORGE bus terminus from 27 December 2017 to collect refuse bags, wheelie bins and do cleaning. The cleansing teams will carry on working until 30 June.
EPWP workers busy cleaning residential areas in George. The target for the George Municipality for the 2017/18 financial year was to employ 1013 EPWP workers per the EPWP National Agreement, which was already surpassed in December with 1188 workers appointed.
