Bringing Birds to your Garden

Feeding birds has become a popular habit, just like tending gardens is. There are those who have seen no point in choosing one over the other and have therefore combined the two hobbies into one. When you tend to turn your backyard into a place that wild birds can feel comfortable in then it becomes a backyard habitat.

When you want to pursue this kind of hobby, you need to understand that birds require the following in order to thrive.

• Shelter

• Protection from predators

• Water

• Food

If you need help in this respect, there are many landscapers who specialize in creating eco-conscious gardens that will include natural plants that will provide food, water and shelter for the birds that you want to attract. However if you want to do it by yourself, keep the following in mind.

Provide clean water for your birds – Water is a natural way of attracting birds. Birds will always look for a water source in order to drink and bathe. It is important to keep your bird baths clean and refresh the water regularly, Use elbow grease to clean the birdbath and refresh the water to stop mosquitoes from breeding in the water.

Provide food for your birds. – Give your birds as much a variety of feeds as possible to attract a variety of birds. You can provide several bird stations so that aggressive birds do not dominate one station and keep away the smaller birds. In order to make sure that your stations are fully occupied put out some Niger seed as a special attractant for finches. Finches are especially loved by most bird enthusiasts. Do not forget to put out some Sunflower hearts as these are a specialty for many birds and will ensure that you have diversity in terms of the bird species that visit your bird feeders.

There are those birds that prefer to feed on insects. These are the most difficult to attract since open bird feeders cannot trap insects at all. The option is to provide a suet cake that has got dried mealworms mixed with other freeze dried insects for these birds to enjoy.

Put out some bird shelters to provide shelter from the elements and predators. The birds may probably become permanent residents of your backyard habitat. Keep as close to the natural order as you can.

Attracting birds to your backyard habitat will be especially rewarding as you watch nature interact and learn the changes in bird feeding behavior as the year goes by. •

A message to all highschool Kids

Bill Gates (the Microsoft Guru), gave this speech at a High School recently.

It mentioned eleven (11) very important things children did not and will not learn in school.

He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids, withno concept of reality and how his concept et them upfor failure in the real world.

Rule 1: Life is not fair – get used to it !
Rule 2: The world doesn’t care about your self-esteem.
The world will expect yo to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.
Rule 3: You will NOT make R500,000 a year right out of high school.
You won’t be a vice-president with a car phone and a driver until you earn both.
Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.
Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity.
Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping:
They called it opportunity.
Rule 6: If you mess up, its NOT YOUR PARENTS’ fault, so don’t whine about your mistakes, learn from them.
Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren’t as boring as they are now.

They got that way from paying our bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were: So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parents generation ,try delousing the closetin your own room.
Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers but life HAS NOT.
In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they’ll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer.
*** This doesn’t bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.
Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters.
You don’t get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF.
Do that on your own time.
Rule 10: Television is NOT REAL LIFE.
In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.
Rule 11: Be nice to nerds.
Chances are you’ll end up working for one.

The Spying Eye – Telkom Direct

DIENS????

Redaksie

Die Engelse gesegde lui mos: “A thing of beauty is a joy forever”.

Tot ‘n volgende keer.

PetroSA opens new geoscience centre

petroSAState oil company PetroSA has opened a state-of-the-art geoscience collaboration, visualisation and technology centre that will help guide its oil and gas explorations while providing a training ground for South Africa’s next generation of upstream professionals.

Built at a cost of R15-million and equipped with the latest visualisation and collaboration equipment, the Ulwazi Collaboration and Visualisation Centre takes seismic and geological data and translates them into detailed, 3D views of subsurface formations.

The facility in Cape Town, the first of its kind in the country, will be used by PetroSA’s upstream asset teams in their search for and development of oil and gas prospects, enabling them to make quicker and better informed decisions on how to develop the company’s upstream assets.

It will also be used on a daily basis to monitor and guide drilling operations for Project Ikhwezi, PetroSA’s flagship initiative to secure additional feedstock reserves from its southern offshore gas fields in order to sustain its Mossel Bay gas-to-liquids (GTL) refinery.

Energy Minister Ben Martins, speaking at a ceremony to mark the opening of the centre in Cape Town on Friday, said the centre’s findings would also assist in government policy making, while helping to promote maths and science education in the country.

“PetroSA should invite learners and students from primary schools, high schools and tertiary institutions to visit the centre,” Martins said. “In the long run, exposing young people to this innovation will contribute to skills development in the technology sector, which is the driver of a modern economy.”

PetroSA Group CEO Nosizwe Nokwe-Macamo said the facility would ensure that “collaborative, multi-disciplinary evaluations of new drilling information and drilling events are done efficiently prior to responding to the event.
“Collaboration between our multi-disciplinary sub-surface teams in Ulwazi furthers our understanding and description of geological structures and reservoirs, which lead to improved decision-making in areas such as well placement, field development planning and reserves estimates.”

The Petroleum, Oil and Gas Corporation of South Africa (PetroSA) manages the country’s commercial assets in the petroleum industry, including the world’s largest commercial gas-to-liquids plant at Mossel Bay in the Western Cape.

Besigheids Fokus – Peperboom restaurant en koffiewinkel

Hierdie groot ou peperboom, wat na alle waarskynlikheid oor die 200 jaar oud is, se dik stam getuig van baie jare se ontbering hier in GrootBrak. Net so, is die Peperboom restaurant

Peperboom beskik oor ‘n binnenshuise- sowel as buitenshuise eetarea.

Peperboom is ook baie betrokke by liefdadigheid.
