Should I get my Cat Neurtered?

It’s a question that all new kitten owners need to ask themselves so first of all I’ll explain what neutering is.

What is Neutering?

In male both of the testes are removed, in female kittens the ovaries and uterus are removed. Both procedures are done under anaesthetic so during the operation your cat will feel no pain. Because the cut is so small the pain is minimal for the cats and the vet will usually administer a pain relief injection which will reduce your cats ability to feel pain while recovering from the operation.

While the cost of the procedure can be expensive and is usually around £40 each there are organisations that can help meet this cost such as the cat’s protection league.

Health Benefits

They suffer less from infectious diseases

There is less likely hood of them developing breast cancers

In females since there is no uterus they can’t develop life threatening illnesses such as Pyometra
In males since there are no testes they can’t develop testicular cancer

Helps prevent other illnesses

Social Benefits

Female neutered felines are less likely to call (that horrible noise that they make when they are in season) and males are less likely to spray. Both sexes are less likely to wander, reducing the possibility of them getting lost or stuck in a strangers garage or shed.

Benefits for you

If you have a male kitty then their urine will not smell as strong after they’ve had the operation. Both sexes also require less food after the procedure so you’ll save money on pet food.

Unless you are intending to become a cat breeder it is advisable to get your cat neutered, you can find out exact costs and information on care after the procedure from your local vets. If you are unable to afford the cost of neutering your cat remember to ask your vet for their advice as they should be able to put you in touch with your local cat protection league. •

Water documentary to premier in Mossel Bay

The premier of the film “It’s everybody’s business” – a documentary about the importance of water in the Garden Route and Klein Karoo – will take place in Mossel Bay later this month.

The 40 minute long documentary was written, filmed and produced for the Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve by Neil Curry.

“One of the aims of the film is to inform everyone who lives in the region about the reserve,” said Willem Botha, the chairman of the board of the Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve Not-for-profit Company.

621 biosphere reserves have been established in 117 countries under the ‘Man and the Biosphere Programme’ of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

Biosphere reserves exist to promote sustainable development through combining local community efforts with sound science.

The South African Government has formally nominated the Gouritz Cluster for biosphere reserve status. The region comprises the coastal area from the Breede River to the Great Brak River, and the interior area from Montagu in the west to Prince Albert in the north, and Uniondale in the east.

“This is a region of incredible diversity in terms of its indigenous vegetation, birds and animals, and in terms of its cultural significance,” said Mr. Botha.

“It’s a region that’s in a unique position to fulfill UNESCO’s vision of reconciling the conservation of biological diversity and economic development through partnerships between people and nature.”

However, Mr. Botha warned that it has now become vital to initiate numerous, concerted projects to protect the natural environment in order to defend its capacity to sustain all forms of life.

Biodiversity is defined as the variety of life in a particular habitat, The concept of the biodiversity hotspot – which in turn is defined as an area of significant biodiversity that is threatened by human activities – was introduced by the British environmentalist Norman Myers in articles published in The Environmentalist in 1988 and 1990.

More recently, Dr. Meyers and others refined the concept to describe a region which boasts at least 1,500 endemic species of plants, but which has lost at least 70% of this vegetation to human activities. (Endemics are plants which grow in one region, and nowhere else in the world.)

According to Wikipedia, “Around the world, 25 areas qualify under this definition, with nine other possible candidates. These sites support nearly 60% of the world’s plant, bird, mammal, reptile, and amphibian species, with a very high share of endemic species.”

In Mr. Curry’s documentary, we’re told that the Western Cape is home to three biodiversity hotspots – fynbos, succulent Karoo, and subtropical thicket – and that the primary aim of the Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve is to save them from further damage by promoting economic development opportunities on a sustainable basis.

“South Africa’s Cape Floristic Region, as it’s known, has around 9,500 recorded plant species spread over the three hotspots.

“Botanists call this the world’s hottest hotspot.”

Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve board member Fred Orban, who also serves on the board of Mossel Bay Tourism, pointed out that the various towns and villages of the region form important components of the biosphere reserve.

“Human beings are very much a part of the chain and the cycle of nature, and one of the important aims of the biosphere reserve concept is to examine and learn how we can conserve natural systems by co-existing with them.

“To put it simply: it is possible to develop our communities and improve people’s lives while still treating our natural resources with care and respect,” he said.

“We’ve initiated discussions with the Municipality of Mossel Bay in the hope that the town will take a lead in this regard – especially since it’s the largest human settlement in the region.”

Mossel Bay Tourism’s Marcia Holm said that her organisation fully supports the initiative.

“The natural environment is the biggest draw-card for tourism in the area, and we’re fully committed to protecting it both because of its intrinsic value, and because it is the figurative goose that lays our industry’s golden egg,” she said.

The documentary will be shown to an invited audience of government and municipal officials, tourism officials, and businesspeople in the Bravo Lounge at the Garden Route Casino on the 30th of August.

Farmers, community leaders, businesses, and people who have an interest in the region are urged to join the Gouritz Cluster Biosphere Reserve by becoming a member of the Non-Profit Company: visit www.gouritz.com.

Create a good first impression when selling your home, says Seeff

Research has shown that about 80% of all prospective buyers know if a home is right for them within six seconds of stepping inside. The importance of first impressions and increasingly picky buyers in a very competitive market, place further pressure on sellers to put their best foot forward when showing a home for the first time.

Your major role as a seller is to make your home as attractive as possible to potential buyers and to ensure the necessary time and effort is invested to give yourself the competitive edge that is needed to sell your home when you want and at the price you want. It all boils down to placing yourself in the buyer’s shoes and to see your home through their eyes.

Seeff Mossel Bay Licensee, Lulu Theron, says that a buyer’s emotions and the impression they get when stepping into a home can play as big a role as the location, security, size, price and parking space of the property. “Buying a home is one of the biggest investments that anyone will make in a lifetime and sellers need to be mindful that prospective buyers constantly experience emotions like excitement, optimism and cautiousness. These emotions play a vital role when it comes to consumer buying decisions and something as simple as garbage bags in front of the home or lawn that is not mowed can be deal breakers. Smells, colours and sounds also play a role”, she concludes.

Some of the simple things that sellers can do to make their property more attractive besides drastic measures like renovating or upsizing include:

• Make sure all the windows are sparkling clean and keep in mind that one of the most affordable ways to transform your home is with a pot of paint. However, it is important to be careful about the paint colour you choose.

• Light is very important so remember to open all your blinds and curtains to let the natural light in. Any decorative or track lighting should also be switched on.

• Ensure that the house is neat and free from clutter.

• Repair things like roof shingles, leaking taps and gutters and replace bulbs in light fixtures and vanities. Make sure the kitchen countertops are clean, hang fresh towels in the bathroom and get your carpets cleaned.

• The smell of a fresh pot of coffee gives a homely and cosy feeling.
• The use of mirrors is also encouraged – the buyer can literally see themselves living there.

“At the end of the day everyone has their own style and you’re not trying to impress with your brand or decor, but rather trying to present a clean and attractive home that exudes potential for the home’s next owners”.

Theron concludes in the majority of cases the first offer made on your home is the right one. “In today’s climate where everybody has access to technology, most buyers have been looking at every home on the market that meets their parameters for weeks or months. By the time they make an offer it’s usually a good one because they understand what they’re dealing with. And it’s usually one you should take serious”.

MOSSEL BAY COUNCIL ADOPTS AIR QUALITY CONTROL BY-LAW

The Mossel Bay Town Council at its monthly meeting on Thursday, 25 July 2013, unanimously adopted a new by-law on air quality control.

The by-law will now be submitted to the Western Cape Provincial Gazette and become effective upon its publication in the Gazette in approximately a month’s time.

In terms of the by-law the whole Mossel Bay municipal area will be an air pollution control zone. It covers a wide range of factors, including smoke emissions from dwellings, the open burning of materials on properties, dust control and emissions from motor vehicles. It also covers emissions from spray painting and sand blasting activities.

Licence to heal – Gourmets & Gourmands’ Therapy Room dream

The fifth annual Gourmets & Gourmands supported by Hartmans on behalf of Carpe Diem School culinary evening is taking place at the end of August. Once again they are dreaming big as the funds raised from the event are going towards the building of a new therapy room for the Carpe Diem School.

“It is such a wonderful blessing to be able to dream such abundant dreams for this incredible school and its beautiful learners. The Gourmets & Gourmands platform has afforded us the opportunity to turn these dreams into reality and we are very thankful to each and every participant, guest and contributor,” says Susan Pretorius, one of the stalwarts behind not only the school, but the event itself.

The school has a very active and dedicated staff contingent, PTA, and management structure. When they do something for the school, they go big or go home, much like the incomparable Mr Bond, the theme of this year’s diamond studded event.

The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) really drives fundraising endeavours at the school. It comprises of 4 teachers, 2 volunteers and 6 parents, who drive projects, raise funds, initiate and organise creative projects as well as create awareness about the school. Apart from the immensely successful Gourmets & Gourmands evening, their annual fundraising projects include 2 golf days, a Zumbathon (a 3 hour Zumba Marathon), Bon Vivant (another culinary extravaganza at the Trans Karoo Restaurant in Great Brak River) and pancake mornings twice a term where volunteers from the George South Dutch Reformed Church bake more than 1200 pancakes in a morning.

The Therapy Room has long been a dream at the school, to provide learners and therapists with a space where they can have access to the tools and time needed to really effect change in the lives of the learners. The new therapy room will give the school’s therapeutic team, comprising of 2 psychologist, a learner support teacher, a Physiotherapist, a speech-therapist and an occupational therapist, the space to handle individual and group sessions with ease. The school also has a nurse who works with the teachers holistically to try and address disabilities, whether physical or mental. With some of the funds raised at last year’s event, the school purchased 25 new bicycles to further facilitate this holistic approach, as riding improves balance and encourages the development of muscle tone.

Through the support of volunteers and donors, the teachers, staff and collaborators at the Carpe Diem School are given a licence to heal, and like the famous Ian Flemming character, they too are the best in the business giving the best to these special (and deserving) children.

Tickets for the Gourmets & Gourmands supported by Hartmans event are available at R600 per person. For more information about tickets, the event, Carpe Diem School or about how to get involved, feel free to contact the school or email carpekarools@telkomsa.net. Onder die Vergrootglas – Grootbrak Restaurante – Tafeltjie Dek

Tafeltjie Dek het sowat 6 jaar gelede sy ontstaan gehad in Groot Brakrivier. Sonder pretensie, sonder fieterjasies, net ‘n lekker, gesellige eetplekkie.

HOEKOM juis TAFELTJIE DEK?

Haar humor is aansteeklik!

Bullies – Part 2

Possible signs of bullying:
Changes in your child’s behavior may alert you to the fact that they are being bullied at school.
– Frightened of walking from and to school
– Doesn’t want to go on the school bus
– Unwilling to go to school
– Feel ill in the mornings
– Begin doing poorly in their school work
– Come home regularly with clothes or books destroyed
– Come home starving (bully takes their food money)
– Become withdrawn, start stammering, lose confidence
– Cry themselves to sleep/ nightmares
– Refuse to talk about what is wrong
– Become distressed and anxious
– Become aggressive and unreasonable
– Begin to bully other children or siblings
– Give unexceptable excuses for any of the above

How to help your child if he/she is being bullied:
– If you suspect bullying, ask him/her directly
– Take bullying seriously and find out the facts when told about the incident of bullying
– Don’t agree to keep the bullying a secret
– Talk with a teacher or head master if the bullying is taking place at school or on the way or from school. The school should take the issue seriously and be prepared to take positive action to stop it. Insist on knowing what the school is going to do to protect your child from bullying.
– Help children practice strategies such as walking with confidence and running away.
– Get your child to talk about his/her feelings about being bullied.
– Arrange to meet your child if the bullying is happening on the way to or from school.
– Talk to other parents and discuss ways to stop the bullying.
– Invite children over to help your child make friends.

What your child can do if he/she is being bullied:
– Tell a friend what is happening and ask them to help you.
– Tell an adult. It’s the best way to stop the bullying. No one can help you, unless the bullying is known.
– Try not to show you are upset or angry.
Bullies love to get reaction and although it is hard, show you don’t care (even if it hurts).
– DO NOT FIGHT BACK.
– Most bullies are bigger or stronger than you and if you fight back you could get hurt or be blamed for starting the trouble.
– Walk tall. If you come across confident and assertive, the bully will find it harder to target you.
– Try to avoid being alone in places where you know the bully is likely to pick on you.
– Use toilets when you know other friends or people are there. (It’s not fair but this might put the bully off).
– Keep a diary of what is happening and how it made you feel. When you decide to tell an adult, this will prove what has been going on and for how long.

Note: You are not alone and although bullying is a horrible experience for anyone, just remember that it is a known fact that people who’s experienced bullying, agreed that they came out stronger and more confident..
